From Darkness to Light

Salma Abbas, 52 – Islamabad

Salma’s Story

Salma’s life was like a bright morning. She was a school teacher and her days sparkled with the innocent laughter, questions and giggles of children. Teaching was not just a profession for her; it was worship and a source of joy. Even after returning home, her happiness did not fade. Her love for cooking and baking encouraged her to try new recipes. Sometimes soft cakes and biscuits, sometimes a new dish, the table was always filled with flavour and love.

She shared life in gatherings with friends, adding color through laughter and conversation. Above all, she found peace sitting at her mother’s feet. She visited her mother several times a week, served her, received prayers and considered herself the luckiest daughter in the world. Life felt complete; illness had never even come near her. But fate had written something else behind the curtain…

The News of Illness

One day in November 2021 changed the map of her life. She was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, HER2+, Stage 2B. For her, this news was nothing short of doomsday. But in reality, this story had begun back in 2019. At that time, she voluntarily had a mammogram done. The report showed some suspicious signs, but due to lack of guidance and awareness, she dismissed them as minor and ignored them. Two years later, when a lump appeared in her left breast, along with swelling under the arm and stabbing pains, the truth revealed itself breast cancer.

Heartbreak and Silence

The diagnosis broke her from the inside. Financial struggles, debts and the pressure of her children’s education were already weighing heavily on her. For a moment, she thought she would not undergo treatment. She did not want to burden anyone. She kept the secret from everyone, sharing it only with her husband.

The Spark of Courage

But Allah did not leave her alone. Her histopathologist, Dr. Amna Babar, sensed her silence and gently said:
“Salma, you must fight not only for yourself and your children, but to become an example of courage for others too.”
Those words sank deep into her heart like seeds of hope. Salma decided she would fight. Quietly, but with complete trust in Allah…
On December 4, 2021, before her first chemotherapy session, she told her elderly mother everything. She made her promise:

“Do not cry. This is Allah’s test, and He is the best of planners.”

The Treatment Journey

Under the care of Dr. Sana at NORI, her chemotherapy began. The nurses treated her with kindness and encouragement. But chemotherapy affects not only the body, but also the soul. Hair loss, weakness, sleeplessness sometimes even a simple phrase could bring tears. Yet Salma chose another path: “courage”.

At every chemo session, she wore a new dress, as if declaring that she was not bowing down to life, but stepping forward with strength and dignity. During radiation, when she also contracted COVID, her body grew even weaker. Still, the only prayer on her lips was: “This too shall pass and Allah will grant me healing.”

The Return of Light

And Allah did grant healing. Slowly, light returned to her darkness. Her children began reaching their milestones:
• Her daughter completed her MBBS;
• Her younger daughter graduated in Software Engineering with an excellent GPA;
• Her son achieved A* grades in all subjects in O-Levels.
And then came the day she thought she might never live to see, her daughter’s wedding. That moment was Allah’s blessing and the greatest victory of her life.

Courage Never Trembles

In Salma’s cancer journey, Allah blessed her with compassionate and supportive people. Among them first was her histopathologist, Dr. Amna Babar, who encouraged her at every step. Then her uncle, Brigadier Surgeon Abrar Zaidi, whose loving guidance made her realize how much suffering and hardship she would endure if she avoided treatment.

Above all, her oncologist, Dr. Sana Mehmood at NORI, whose kindness, sincerity and care gave her the strength to face every difficulty. Throughout treatment, Salma wrote a story of determination and resilience. Whether it was the torment of chemotherapy or the agonizing pain of surgery, she never complained. She stood firm like a brave woman. Her faith was unshakable: that Allah’s will and the wisdom of her chosen doctors were the best for her. Truly, Allah helps those who help themselves and trust His decisions. Six months later, when her treatment was successfully completed, she breathed a sigh of relief and began regular follow-ups.

During this time, she also met Dr. Hira at Shifa International Hospital, who supported her with great care and affection. By Allah’s grace, Salma went on to complete cancer-free years successfully.

Salma’s Message

Salma says:
“Cancer taught me that true wealth is health, and the greatest support is one’s connection with Allah. Some days are still heavy, but every day brings a new miracle.”
Her message for all women going through this trial: “Do not let fear overpower you. Allah is very nearby. Your prayers will surely be heard. Your tears will turn into tears of joy, and your pain will transform into ease, In Sha Allah.”

Salma’s story proves that wounds can be healed with the balm of courage, tears can turn into prayers before Allah, and trials can become rays of light. This story is for everyone searching for hope’s light in their journey through darkness. Believe it, light always returns!
